My friend Vangelis ended up buying a DJI AVATA 2 as his first FPV drone… I wanted to see if he could pick it up for the first time and chase a real FPV drone… we start small with a tiny whoop, then a mini whoop, then a 3.5inch and finally a 5inch… how far will he get? This is a bit of fun, it’s not a scientific test, but let us know what you want us to test next. The Pavo Pico was supplied for ...

The CRUX35 HD was my favourite sub250g freestyle bind and fly... but there was one major issue with it... and that's its durability when running a dji Vista/ Runcam link. This simple upgrade solves that and even a beginner with no build experience can do it. In my previous review of the Crux35 I said that it was great but I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner because it wouldn’t survive many c...

    This is really inspiring man! I'm now waiting for my first fpv quad to arrive, as I ordered it 3 days ago... and I'm kinda in this same exact situation, I've been working on the sim and I feel now pretty comfortable with flying mechanics but I'm now really looking forward on how what I now know to do inside the sim will translate to the real world with a real quad... seeing your experience is really cool! Also about the flight modes even in the simulator I feel angle and horizon mode really uncomfortable and restrictive after you're already used to fly in acro... the only situation I find them useable is for indoor flights... but I guess after you get used to fly in such a tight spaces one could also try acro and be more comfortable hahahaha great video man! I hope to have such a great first experience too pretty soon

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix 14 днів тому

      Unfortunately not. I’ve now transferred the whole thing to a Djinn F25 frame to see if it’s something to do with the frame but I’m almost certain it’s a problem with the DJI O3. But before you do anything drastic to fix it see if EMAX will help (or if they just tell you it was the wind) Flash bluejay onto the ESC and change the pwm frequency to 48khz - it’s set to 24khz which causes issues with the O3 (this has fixed the issue on some of my other quads). Make sure everything is tight on the frame… the camera the motors etc Failing that you’ll likely need to take the camera apart and check that it’s all tightened down… and then as others have suggested here in the comments add glue to the camera because if a lens issue. None of these have worked for me so far but as soon as we have some good weather I’ll test it out in the new frame and see if that’s helped… otherwise I’ll be getting a new O3

    I have been watching video after video because i want to get an FPV drone.. Question why is the Avata 2 not an FPV drone ? Seems like the perfect choice for someone getting into the hoby.. When you get more experiance is it not possible to build a drone later down the line that will work with the DJI Goggles 3 ?

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix 16 днів тому

      It’s a running joke in the community… I believe the avata is a great beginner quad because it just gets you in the air as quickly as possible which means it’s more likely you’ll go through the pain of learning the other aspects of FPV (aside from building, I still stand by my statement that I wouldn’t build straight away). The only issues with the avata 2 is that the motion controller being used in the video doesn’t work with any other FPV quads and the normal remote is expensive in comparison to other FPV radios. There’s the issue of sending it back to DJI for repair because in FPV it’s inevitable that you’ll crash and break something at some point. But honestly as a first quad I think it’s a pretty good intro into the hobby and you could do a lot worse… if you have the money go for it, you can always sell it on if you don’t like it.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix 22 дні тому

      I think for a first experience of FPV it must be amazing with the motion controller if you know nothing else. But in between laps I was freestyling each of the quads (I didn’t put it in the video) which is why by the end of it vag wanted the full manual controller. But yeah it’s not even close to the rush of a 5inch… slowly slowly catchy monkey… I’ll convert him eventually 😂 Freestyling the standard pico isn’t so easy as there no way of catching it at the end of a trick without getting on the throttle way way early… might have to change the motors and try 3s on it though

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix 21 день тому

      @Nik_FPV621 no worries I have great video planned for it. But yeah FPV parts aren’t cheap… the F5 mini should last you awhile but there are also cheaper frames you can look at like the TBS Source one The F5 mini has a 20x20 stack mount rather than the normal 30x30 stack mount (the t-motor stack I used for my F5 won’t fit the mini frame). But honestly I would look at what you can get locally if budget is an issue as the import duty and shipping from anything you buy abroad makes it higher cost!

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix 23 дні тому

      I learned on a cinerace20 so I probably have a more biased opinion of it… but it took a beating when I was learning and wasn’t so powerful that I couldn’t control it. The fly lens 85 by Flywoo might be a good option this and the BetaFPV Pavo pico are faster and more agile than the cinerace (unless they’ve updated the motors on the cinerace since I got one) Honestly though if you don’t mind the open prop design the crux35 is a cheap and really good option… it’s not the most durable though so you might have to change the frame at some point. But honestly whatever your first quad is you’ll love it no matter what and you’ll end up getting more eventually so don’t think too long about it

      That camera mount I use should work for any camera as it just angles in more for a smaller camera like the ant… however given its smaller than the runcam wasp I would look at some of the mounts Toronto FPV has made for analog cameras on the frame as they protect the lens much better as it sits within the standoffs

    Hey I've been silently following your FPV journey for a couple of months now, I've just started myself and went down a similar route to you, but instead of starting 5 inch I bought a Mobula 8 03 then realised it was to heavy to freestyle like I wanted , I then bought analogue stuff 04xpros with the idea of getting a Walksnail VRX in the future and I'm actually loving it even though I've tasted that sweet sweet video feed that DJI has to offer, I think I'm more of a performance junkie, I was just wondering how the Baby Hawk 03 is holding up was the jitter the 03 itself or was it the quad, I'm about to pull the trigger on it but your experience with it is making be hold off, have you tried putting a different 03 on it yet? My goggles 2 are just on the shelf at the moment collecting dust and I want a quad I can fly anywhere but will some decent power, it feels like the Baby hawk 03 is the only real option at the moment for a BNF

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix Місяць тому

      I tried so many things with the babyhawk O3 and couldn’t get rid of that jitter so I can’t recommend it… I’ve taken the insides of that and put it into the Quadmula Djinn25 frame to see if that fixes is but I ended up travelling a lot so haven’t had a chance to fly it more yet. But I know what you mean the O3 image is amazing, I’ve been testing whoops out with HDzero and analog but I wish DJI made a whoop sized unit! So I’m guessing you don’t want to try building your own quad? It’s probably the better way to get into the O3 freestyle at the moment but there are other BNF’s that have come on the market more recently. I haven’t flown these but wanted to try them out. The Five33 Tiny trainer now comes in O3 now too and is apparently amazing, the AOS3.5 is recommended a lot if you can find a BNF one. The list opens up more if you to the DJI vista version or O3 in 5inch is popular (I’d recommend the GEPRC Mark5) The other option would be to buy something that doesn’t have an O3 version and install it in there. It’s usually pretty simple. Your whoops thought you could upgrade the motors to a higher kv and then you’ll have that punch

      @@GarethDix Thankyou for the detailed reply and the suggestions, yes I may have to build my own it seems. It would be nice if the likes of Gep RC sold something similar to their smart 35 but built for an 03 but without the 03 so I can add my own and make it cheaper. The mark 5 is defiantly on the Wishlist but for now I want to remain sub 250. I've seen so many people with the Babyhawk 03 with smooth footage I wonder if they're all like that and its just rocksteady that smooths it out? If I put higher kv motors on my Mobula 8 03 I would probably get like a minute of flight time, the analogue version is great though, really good, it's a super whoop. Thanks again and all the best.

      @ltclungex6643 I’m pretty sure other people I’ve asked about the issue have said it hasn’t been a problem with theirs so it’s probably a QC issue. If you buy it from somewhere local it might be better because then you can return it or exchange it with them. I’m almost sure you could fit an O3 in the Smart35… a naked O3 would definitely fit in there. I’m guessing they get more sales in mini whoops with the O3 because it’s a bit safer and it won’t have props in view like a freestyle quad. I just picked up an Ummagawd 2Fiddy ready to build kit with an O3 so let’s see how that goes… it comes with everything you need to build it and looks fairly simple to put together. I also got a spare frame as I want to build a 3.5inch version of it as well to see how that flies too

      @Nik_FPV621 it depends on how easy it is to get out of those zones for you. @GarethDix Місяць тому

      @Nik_FPV621 that’s something I plan on testing more when I get back… the 3inch feels more like a 5inch at the moment but I think that’s just because the 3.5inch is 20g lighter… with the additional weight I think it will feel more like a 5inch. If you want to build Sub250g for the 5in feeling then it’s worth going with the 5in first as a reference. If you’re not likely to fly 5in that often you could just go Sub250g and not worry about it ☺️

      Take the time in the simulator… you’ll want to get out there as soon as possible but it’s really worth it! When you first start flying try and fly as often as possible to get your confidence up. Fly for fun but focus on one thing each session. It can be frustrating at first with the learning all the technical parts along with the flying but honestly it’s worth all the pain! And do consider a tiny whoop I always thought they were toy like and not serious quads but I’ve been loving flying them around over the winter and they make even the smallest areas feel like a huge playground

      The DJI mini is pretty quiet… but I think that’s because it has a lower sound rather than lower volume. It’s possible though, it just depends on how you want it to fly and how you want to fly it… my Pavo pico is way quieter than the DJI mini… when you stand a few meters away you wouldn’t even notice it. My new 5inch build is pretty quiet if you’re flying it gently… but it screams as soon as you hit the throttle

      @@EEEEMMMMKKKK a 5inch freestyle is probably not where I would go if quiet is the most important thing. you probably want something lightweight which will allow you to use smaller motors and get bi-bladed props... I was considering the f3 when it came out but ended up doing an Aos3.5 I run these same motors though on a mamba Aio. The Aos is a squished x as this appears to be also that’s why I wondered. This frame is far more durable I’m sure. I’ve blown mine apart several times. Had a motor fry over concrete and then a prop blow off over the same concrete. I run way bigger battery’s though. Limenier 850 6s. I originally cared about sub 250 but nobody ever sees me when I fly so I don’t care.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix Місяць тому

      The AOS v5 frames have the arms a little further back in the body like a true X does which is probably how they get the props out of view by squashing the x. It does look like the AOS frames use a lot of the weight in the body for frame rather than the arms so hopefully that’s added protection for the expensive bits! I run larger batteries on my other Sub250g quads when I’m out of the city but then I just built a new 5inch which I tend to pick up when I know I’m going to the middle of nowhere

    • @GarethDix

      The standoffs shouldn’t be in view unless you’re running a very high camera angle. The props are in view on most x-frames used for freestyle… it’s not a cinematic drone. But you could go with the Djinn F25 which solves both of those because of the frame design. I’m sure they’re working on larger versions of that frame but it would likely end up almost being like a H-frame
